[ENG TRANS] Acteur Musical report on Seunghyun's debut in [Jack The Ripper]

PLEASE TAKE OUT WITH FULL CREDITS, INCLUDING TRANSLATORS. THANK YOU ^^

Full of cheek and cuteness; able to let the quiet atmosphere around older members become livelier; in Korea, such youths are labeled as "Maknaes". Maknaes are those who provide solace for others' emotions, and those who are appreciated to be around. Along with what was described, challenging the role of "Daniel" in the musical[Jack The Ripper]is the youngest Seunghyun, who is part of Korean five-member band FTISLAND which is also popular in Japan. Born in 1992 and about to turn 20, Seunghyun, who will undertake the role of "Daniel" together with outstanding figures Ahn Jae Wook, Uhm Ki Joon and Super Junior's Sungmin, challenged the musical stage for the first time and promptly completed the virgin performance.

On the 25th June press conference, he took to the stage with the various seniors with a nervous look, periodically speaking a few lines of Japanese, occasionally slipping out a small slip of paper with Japanese on it, occasionally smiling at Lee Geon Myung (who plays Anderson the detective) who was sitting beside him and took away the slip of paper. He warmed up the venue and the atmosphere, all the while exhibiting his passion for the stage.

"(When it was confirmed that I would be performing,) I thought: Ah, this is a chance. At the same time, I also felt that I had the responsibility to move the audience, and whether I could rise up to the pressure of expectation. This production will become a turning point in my life. I received the teachings of the seniors, not as a member of FTISLAND, but as a person who wants to let everyone see my growth."

Working with seniors like Ahn Jae Wook (whose age difference with himself is many times over) on the same role, Seunghyun experienced pressure due to his young age. In truth, when they met, it was like, "Because it's the first time, I was very nervous. I don't have too many experiences in love, so how do I interpret (this role) to its best......" After meeting, while going about the various magazine photo shoots, he often used Japanese to joke and cheer up the people around. The innocence and vigour, along with the care he took toward the people around, kept people thinking that this is really the mannerism of a Maknae.

Afterwards, during the interview, Seunghyun was asked about the difficulty of singing and acting concurrently, and he answered promptly in Japanese: "Super difficult!". "If you're into the role, naturally, you'll be able to sing and act. So now, in order to get into the character, firstly, I have to get rid of my normally-loose tongue, and I'm working hard to input "Daniel's" character of feigning ignorance but becoming very good when he gets serious into my life."

Seunghyun, who said that he's searching for his own uniqueness as Daniel, mentioned their attitudes towards love when asked about strong similarities with his character: "When meeting a girl whom I'm interested in, I don't dare to look into her eyes at the beginning, and I don't dare to start the conversation. But once I've confessed to the other party, it will only escalate into burning love. It was only after meeting "Daniel" that I realised that men can do it too. This is what I've dreamt of somewhere before." After watching the videos of seniors' past performances, Seunghyun found areas of overlap with what he had learnt. "At the beginning, I imagined how the seniors interpreted (the role of "Daniel"), and then I copied every action. But then I realised that being like this would not make the experience mine. Of course there's the notion of ‘Imitation is the beginning of creation', and I wanted to do it like this from the beginning, but there is the knowledge that I must use my brains to involve my own unique actions and method of acting. Using my own method to grasp (an understanding of) the character, fusing together the fresh character emotions and then have the same feelings as the audience; that's the best."

He very seriously listened to the Japanese questions; confirming with the interpreter during the interview, "Tough?" "Rehearsal?" when he met with words which he did not know. Behind his face of a smile which is easy to get close to, there appears to be the masking of a face which is equally hardworking. That day was also a nerve-wrecking schedule of Japanese activities: After concluding the band's tour activities in Fukui, he took time out to travel to Tokyo alone early in the morning. He only slept a mere two hours on the train. "In Korea, we wake up at 8am, start musical practices at 9am; after ending musical practice at 10pm, I've to immediately delve into band practice. In the midst of all these, I unknowingly lost weight. One day when I looked into the mirror, I realised that I could see my clavicle, and I got a big shock!" This sort of strenuous daily life was also narrated with an enthusiastic expression.

Whenever Seunghyun has time, he will watch movies because it is his interest. When he was asked which work or actor he looks up to for inspiration for his own acting, without hesitation, he excitedly said: "《Inception》! I've watched it thrice; Leonardo DiCaprio's every expression... (said in Japanese) is really very handsome!" When he was again asked about his passion towards being on stage for the first time, his expression became serious again: "This work wishes to present the idea that "Man can achieve that sort of level of putting love before self". I want to bring out the same feelings and hard work as when I'm performing the LIVE with FTISLAND, facing this with my best attitude."

During the interview, the occasionally-coughing Seunghyun haltingly answered to concerns on his health and voice: "Totally no problems! I look like I'm not too good, right? I've worried everyone." Indeed, a sentence said by he who makes those around him smile but secretly keeps working hard. This is truly the power of the Maknae. In this way, regarding the desire to leave behind his unique colour on the musical stage, he said these unforgettable words: "Acting is like a little prank. In this sort of prank, if you unknowingly reveal the real emotions outside the wall, if the audience can feel it within, then that is my unique flavour." We can't wait to watch the cute and mischievous boy, Song Seunghyun's interpretation of the youngest "Daniel".
